Sierraflixx, a Video Streaming Platform

Sierra Leone Filmmakers have been long yearning for a solution that could help them market their movies and earn out of their hard labour. But such opportunities have been very slow to come by. Our Sierra Leonean brother and sister, Fatu Koroma and Idriss Barry Jalloh have just brought to life a very impressive modern streaming solution, Sierraflixx, a video streaming platform.

Sierraflixx is an Over-the-Top Based Video-on-demand streaming platform that offers a wide variety of movies, tv shows, documentaries and more. Sierraflixx streams 25times faster than YouTube in real-time. It streams up to 4k resolutions and offers parental control features. Sierraflixx is a legally registered cooperation in the United States of America and Sierra Leone while operations and management are being carried out in Sierra Leone.

The founder Idrissa Barry Jalloh happens to be a very notable professional graphics designer, movie director and the owner of more than two brands, notably the National Films Awards (NFA). He founded Sierraflixx in 2020 and continued building it over the years. The streaming platform is owned by Idrissa Barry Jalloh and the wonderful magnet and magnificent Fatu Kamara who has been behind the scenes pushing the industry in her own way.

Fayia Foray: How Does Sierraflixx Operate with Filmmakers?

Fayia: What’s the idea behind Sierraflixx? Why Sierraflixx?

Idriss Barry:  ‘’Sierraflixx was founded with the intention to give Sierra Leoneans and Africans the platform to showcase their content and also make money from them.

As a founder, I always believe in solving problems. For every brand I launch, I must have seen a problem in the industry that I’ll try to solve. It’s a problem that we face in a country already. That’s how I come about bringing up business ideas.

Sierra Leonean content cannot be accessed on platforms like Hulu, Netflix, Iroko, Amazon prime and a whole lot of others. Because these platforms are owned by people in foreign countries, they have already monopolized them for their own people. They can only take content from people they know. Because I had an experience in submitting a film to Netflix
and I know how daunting it can be when I tried and it did not work.

The only aggregator for Netflix in West Africa is Film One TV which is in Nigeria. That’s not the only thing. They will take a
whole lot of percentage from every project that goes through them. And they will put their own logos on it and a whole lot of credit. So it’s really hard for Sierra Leoneans to get their content across these big platforms. So, we thought it fit that we can
still be able to showcase content from Sierra Leone to the world and that is why I brought up the idea about Sierraflixx.

I thought it fit that we can still have a platform wherein someone from any part of the country can be able to access Sierra Leonean films worldwide and every other person from other parts of the country.

As the founder, I started working on this idea about two years back and when I met Fatu Kamara, I told her about the idea and we kicked it up. And I can tell you that the platform is so unique and very much professional like any other platform in any part of the world. We offer streaming services; you can visit the platform and watch very beautiful Sierra Leonean movies. We also brought this idea to light because Sierra Leonean filmmakers hardly realize from their films because of bad market and piracy. Foreign films have proliferated so much across our market at a very cheaper rate and now people no longer watch films on DVD because every now uses smart TVs and smartphones.

With Sierraflixx, we will be buying some films, and partnering with filmmakers so that producers can realize something out of their hard work. This will give assurance to producers that as soon as they are done with their projects, they will have a platform to air their films and make money.  This will be an employment hub for the country as well as entertainment. We have over five thousand people in the country that depend on filmmaking and the government cannot be able to employ everybody. It’s not just money-making. So, Sierraflixx we are looking forward to long-term expansion to other countries across Africa.

YouTube has videos that they prioritise, and a lot of Sierra Leoneans can only get one million views which are equivalent to like $1000 and that means that the content owners would have spent more money than that. And you’ll be watching Sierra Leonean content and get something else that doesn’t concern you. Also, it’s a downloadable platform wherein anybody can download and pirate it. And it’s free to view.
