The National Film Awards hosted their first masterclass at the Africell American Corner, Bathurst St, Freetown, Sierra Leone. The masterclass was held for a period of two days, on the 22nd and the 23rd December 2021.
As an awarding organization, it is part of their commitment to offer a masterclass for the nominees of every edition to ensure they build their capacity so that they can make more better movies. The masterclass should also help to promote the culture of learning and better content production in the Sierra Leone Film industry.
The chairperson of the Sierra Leone Film Guild, Daramy Kabba presented the strategic plan which he championed and developed for the Sierra Leone Film Guild and it’s membership. He opened the podium for the masterclass. ‘’Sometimes we need radical approach to reach te right destination’’, he said.
The facilitators of the masterclass were, Wurie Bah, one of Sierra Leone’s most professional and experienced screenwriters. He covered the SCREEN WRITING and ACTING FOR BIG SCREEN sessions. He was able to take the participants through the process of storytelling, screenwriting and laid emphasized on research to gather facts in order to get a better story done.
Brima Abdulai Sheriff facilitated on LEADERSHIP and CONFIDENCE. His two sessions were concentrated on helping the participants understand and get the insight of how better leadership could enhance better and quality production, especially within their production houses and wherever filmmakers gather.
Frank Raja Araize, one of Africa’s most experience and respected movie directors with a lot of accolades to his name facilitated on DIRECTING A MOVIE. He broke down the process of directing where the movie director needs to direct as, directing as the eyes of the writer, directing as the eyes of the actor, directing as the eyes of the crew, directing as the eyes of a marketer, and directing as the eyes of the audience. ‘’The director is the jack of filmmaking skills but master one, which interpretation,’’ he said.
The masterclass ended with the awarding of certificates to the participants and pleasantries.
