THIS IS WHY SIERRA LEONE FILMMAKERS ARE FURIOUS

The Government of Sierra Leone has made several promises that they will enable the Sierra Leone Film Industry but none has been fulfilled. This is why the Sierra Leone Filmmakers have taken upon a campaign for the enactment of the Sierra Leone Film Policy which has been in the draft stage for over three years now. From our observation, it looks like the government is not ready to keep it promises because they have been using Kao Denero, their poppet entertainment ambassador to throw spanners into the campaign.  The below are the promises made so far.

 

PRESIDENTIAL COMMITMENT TO THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY – THE FILM SECTOR TO BE SPECIFIC IN 2018

His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio in 2018 on the occasion of the State Opening of the First Session of the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone in the Chamber of Parliament Building Tower Hill, Freetown. Under Music and Performing Arts in paragraph 80, he promised to promote the creative industry, review the piracy act and help erect studios for music and film production and an auditorium for musical shows and screening of films. It is almost four (4) years now and nothing has happened in that regard.

Furthermore, in paragraph 81 he said “To promote music and performing arts, my Government will (i) review and enforce the copyright laws (ii) review policies and establish standards for promotion of music and performing arts (iii) establish a National Arts Gallery and Theatre for Performing Arts (iv) promote Sierra Leonean music and musicians nationally and internationally and maintain good business ethics in the industry (v) re-establish and develop cultural village.”

His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio 2020 on Thursday, 28th May 2020, on the occasion of the State Opening of the Third Session of the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone In the Chamber of Parliament Building Tower Hill, Freetown in page 21 under the Ministry of Information and Communication heading you stated that the Ministry of Information has put forward a draft film policy that seeks to facilitate sustainable development of the Sierra Leone film industry to meet international standards.

His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio, on Tuesday, 18th May 2021. On the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Fifth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone in the Chamber of Parliament Building Tower Hill, Freetown. Under Information and Communications in paragraph 32 you promise us that your government will initiate engagements to review the 2011 Copyright law, holistically support the development of the music industry, delineate a coherent film policy and structure the growth of the film industry, and bolster up the development of the creative industries in Sierra Leone. Until today our policy is still at its draft stage.
